Decorating Your Home With Rugs

Using smaller-than-room-size rugs to highlight particular areas in a room can be challenging if not daunting, due to several subjective factors that affect the choice of rugs and their placement. However, as in many instances there are ‘rules’ or norms that may be followed when placing rugs in a room. Some of these are the following:

If you are decorating a large room with a rug you want to make a certain center point somewhere in that room. Focusing on one area will make your room seem more inviting. Try placing a 4′x6′ rug or 5′x7′ rug in an area and place a table on top of it. Guests who sit at the table will keep their feet warm on the rug. You can purchase any shape you want to; round, hexagon, square, or rectangle.

Before buying a rug for a dining table, measure the table top and add at least two feet all around (up to 30 inches) to get the minimum size of the rug. This will allow the person to move the chair back or forward without the chair legs being off the rug. If the legs get off the rug when it is moved back, the chair legs may push the rug edge up when the chair is pushed forward, creating a possible trip hazard for the person. Thus, most preferable dining room rugs extend to the rear legs of all chairs surrounding the table.

Don’t buy a rug just to place a china cabinet or serving table on. This is a waste of money when you are hiding a rug.

When placing a rug down in your bedroom you may want to consider small rugs placed around your bed and in front of your furniture. This will accent your area and not look overwhelming. Placing a large rug in your bedroom will probably get covered up by the bed. This may make it difficult to keep cleaned and vacuumed.

A bedroom rug need be centered in the room but equal spaces between its two or three sides and the wall will give the same effect.

Placing a rug in front of a bookshelf or fireplace can mean instant decor. Adding a simple rug can give the area personality and color. Use a light color to brighten up the area if it is not a high traffic area. If it is high traffic you will want to use colors that are dark and won’t show dirt as easy. Oriental rugs are highly recommended when using a rug to enhance an area.

When choosing a rug for your home make sure you carefully consider hand made rugs as well as machine made rugs. A hand made rug will be more dependable and put together more sturdy and may be used in high traffic areas because of the durability.

Lucky for you rug decorating has been made so much easier with these cream area rugs.
